About us

SWS provides a range of Countryside and Landscape management services across both commercial and residential sectors and is owned and managed by Matt Craig. Matt studied at Hadlow College and gained a BSc Honours degree from Greenwich University in Landscape and Countryside Management. Matt has previously worked for a local Landscape Company and more recently managed Country Parks.

SWS was established in 2009 by Steve Wright.

Steve's experience with conservation began at the age of nine as a junior volunteer with WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in the New Forest. From that point on, he developed a keen interest in conservation being in charge of the class Nature Table at the age of ten, and later became the school Pond Warden. He went on to study horticulture and agriculture at Moreton Morrell College in Warwickshire.

Steve took to studying deer, gaining both Level 1 and 2 Deer Management qualifications, and both Advanced and Lowland Deer Management certificates at Cirencester Agricultural College, and went on to become a part-time instructor with the British Deer Society. He went on to train further in forestry and arboriculture, gaining Royal Forestry Certification.

Steve had a varied career, but eventually settled into Woodland management and started his business SWS Woodland and Conservation Management Services later in his life. Steve focused on woodland and conservation management, including coppice crafts, practising these crafts to the general public from woods harvested during his conservation works.

Sadly Steve passed away in late 2017.

Having been mentored and trained by Steve, Matt Craig and Jane Brazier continued to run the business on a part time basis to both complete Steve’s ongoing commitments and keep the business ticking over. In 2020 Matt decided to expand the business and make it his full-time occupation.

Matt is keen to continue with the ethos of Steve's vision by expanding the business into all aspects of Countryside and Landscape Management for both commercial and residential clients. Please see the links above for more details of the services offered.
